Would you like to join the 9th Annual Candy Buy Back program of San Diego County?
The Candy Buy Back Program is a collaborative effort among local health agencies and other community members to address the issue of childhood obesity and dental health among our local children.
Program Description
During the Candy Buy Back Program, children will bring in their surplus candy into participating Dentists. The Dental Offices will give the kids $1 for each pound of candy brought in during the days following Halloween/Harvest Celebrations. Candy will then be shipped to our US troops overseas via Operation Gratitude. Participating shipping stores will ship the candy “at cost” to Operation Gratitude who ships the candy to our US troops. http://www.opgratitude.com/
What costs will my Dental Office Incur?
- Discounted shipping fees to ship candy and dental supplies to Operation Gratitude in Van Nuys, CA
- $1 per pound paid to kids for their candy (the average cost for 2017 was $352)
- Boxes to transport candy and supplies to shippers
- Staffing to receive candy from children
- Scale to weigh candy.
Optional Costs:
- Printing costs for flyers targeted toward your client base.
- Any advertising you choose to promote your program
- Dental supplies added to candy boxes
A Quick How-To Guide for Dental Offices:
- Train your employees on the program so that families have a good experience when they drop off the candy
- Select dates and times to run your program. We recommend 1-7 days after October 31 with at least one “after-school” drop off time. If you are on a limited budget, allow shorter times to receive candy.
- Fill out the PDF flyer that we will send to you. You may distribute information to your clients via e-mail or hard copy flyer. You may also place ads for your program but please include the legal disclaimer provided on the official PDF flyer we send you.
- Allow boxes to be decorated. We are encouraging decoration of boxes this year. You may want to allow your patrons to decorate boxes during the month on October to promote your event.
- Allow your staff to include their own candy or letters to US troops. We also recommend adding dental supplies to candy boxes.
- Take photos or video of the event and email to healthykidschoice.sabrina@gmail.com for media coverage. You may also use for positive media with your client base.
- PLEASE: Track the pounds of candy received and send information to healthykidschoice.sabrina@gmail.com. This data will really help us gain media coverage and secure future funding.
